In 2019 I started listening to podcasts and audiobooks whenever I could — and it was absolutely awesome. As a PA student, my brain is constantly being stuffed full of medical everything. It was a relief to gain some of my humanity (truly – lolz) and balance back by listening to these while I was exercising, doing dishes, laundry, etc.
If you aren’t already doing this, you should be!
I use the apple podcast app (free) and I have an Audible subscription for books.
An Audible subscription gives you 1 credit to use per month towards a book. How this can save you money: if the cost of your monthly subscription is less than the cost to pay cash for the book. It almost always saves me money! (And did on 6 of the 8 books below)
To try Audible for 30 days for free, check out this link. It will give you 1 free audiobook and 2 Audible originals! Choose one of the books below! If you use this link, I will receive a small commission. Thank you for supporting me! Be sure to decide if you want to keep your subscription before the 30 days are up — that’s when they’ll charge you for month 2 (another credit)! Read below for the audiobooks I loved in 2019!
Without further ado (and in no particular order)…
1) “Girl, Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis
Okay, so technically I read this in 2018, but in 2019 I listened to it again and read the hard copy, underlining as I went. I don’t feel dramatic when I say both this and “Girl Stop Apologizing” (below) are life-changing and should be required reading for all women.
They have both topped the New York Times Best Sellers lists for weeks on end. I highly recommend listening to them — even if you get a hard copy, too — because Rachel narrates it herself.
She is the most incredible motivational speaker in a slap-you-in-the-face, okayokayIpromiseI’llgetmyshiztogether kind of way! I cannot say enough good things about these books.
2) “Girl, Stop Apologizing” by Rachel Hollis
See above – ditto x 1,000,000. An absolute must-read.
3) “The Moment of Lift” by Melinda Gates
This book caught me off guard. It is moving and humbling. Melinda has spent years working with women across the globe with urgent needs. She tells their stories in a powerful, poignant, often heartbreaking way that calls for unity and urgent action. Please, please read this book.
4) “Better Than Before” by Gretchen Rubin
The reviews speak for themselves with this one. “Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives” — she tackles every aspect of habits you could think of and many more you couldn’t. I won’t lie, this isn’t exactly an entertaining read, but it definitely is an impactful one! Habits are the building blocks of our lives, yo.
5) “You are a Badass at Making Money” by Jen Sincero
Okay, I loved this book so flipping much. I have huuuge dreams (like owning a beach house in Hawaii) and I currently have six-figure (and growing) student loan debt. Jen absolutely spoke to my heart & soul and was highly entertaining!
She walks through the sometimes hilarious journey she took to get from being broker-than-a-joke to being a multimillionaire. Whether you have a messed up money mindset or not, I consider this a must-read. This is one I plan to listen to again in 2020. (Profanity warning.)
6) “You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero
See above for why I love Jen Sincero. While I admittedly prefer her book on money, they are different and this one is also excellent and very inspiring. And clearly 46,000+ people agree. (Profanity warning.)
7) “High Performance Habits” by Brendon Burchard
This book took me forever to get through — because it was so dang incredible I kept having to stop and write things down!! Seriously, I started only listening to this book when I could take notes into a google doc set aside specifically for it.
Brendon very clearly details specific things to do and change in your life. In 2020, I’m going to read the hard copy again and implement the things he recommends. His other books are also on my radar.
He’s a wildly successful and highly regarded personal development trainer and you bet I’m gonna do my best to drink whatever kool-aid he’s drinking.
8) “Everything is Figureoutable” by Marie Forleo
“Everything is Figureoutable” was the last book I “read” in 2019 and it couldn’t have been a better way to wrap up the year. Marie is a sassy, uber-successful woman from New Jersey who teaches how she got from being decidedly unsuccessful to inspiring thousands of women across the globe daily.
She narrates it herself and her Jersey attitude and accent bleed through, entertaining and inspiring each minute. The lesson she teaches “Everything is Figureoutable” is already making a difference in my life. Get on board, this book is stunning.
There you have it, sista! 8 crazy impactful books I read in 2019. I hope you read one or more of them! Let me know in the comments if you do and if you have any recommendations for books I should add to my list!
